SHA-256 hash generator
Hash text or a local file with SHA-256 (Web Crypto). Hex digest stays on your device.

How it works
SHA-256 is a 256-bit cryptographic hash. Same input → same digest; small input changes → large digest changes.
This page uses crypto.subtle.digest('SHA-256', …) in your browser. Text is encoded as UTF-8. Files are read with File.arrayBuffer() and never uploaded.
Hashing is not encryption. Do not treat a hash of a password as safe storage without a proper password-hashing scheme (salt + slow KDF).
Examples
text: Toolbench sha256: (run in page — depends on UTF-8 bytes) # echo -n Toolbench | sha256sum # compare with local CLI
FAQ
Matches sha256sum? For the same bytes, yes. Watch newlines: CLI files often end with \n; the textarea may not.
SHA-1 / MD5? Not on this page. Prefer SHA-256 for new work.
File size limits? Bound by browser memory. Very large files may be slow or fail.
Is this mining or signing? No — digest only, no network.
HMAC? Not included. This is raw SHA-256 of the message bytes.
