How it works

A .gitignore lists path patterns Git should not track. / anchors to the repo root; ** crosses directories; ! un-ignores.

This page merges curated snippets (OS, languages, secrets). Duplicate pattern lines are collapsed. It does not call an external API.

Review the result for monorepos and generated lockfile policy before committing.

Examples

# Node
node_modules/
dist/
.env
!.env.example

# Python
__pycache__/
.venv/

# OS
.DS_Store
Thumbs.db

FAQ

Will this overwrite my file? No. It only builds text in the browser. Merge manually.

Why keep .env.example? Secrets stay out of git; examples stay in via !.env.example.

Official GitHub templates? No — short practical sets. Compare with github/gitignore if you need full vendor lists.

Does this run git? No. Client-side text only.

Monorepos? Use this as a root starter; packages may need local ignores too.
